Very rare 18th century carved plane.
German or Austrian origin.
This is a unique plane with very fine carvings. A saint figure on the top and a lion’s head on the front. Despite being dated 1897, the plane will be of much earlier origin. It is likely that a later owner incised the year and name. However, this is of a significantly different level than the carving. Most likely the plane was made of oak.
The plane is over 1 meter long and 8 cm wide. The wedge is also carved including a cross. Probably the wedge is not original.
The plane iron is from Record.
The plane has suffered during the last few centuries. There are old worm holes and some large cracks. However, this is entirely in keeping with the character of the plane.
Summary: “An absolutely unique European plane from the 18th century, with religious carvings”. The plane weighs 5 kilos.
